Our story
The History of Betjeman and Barton It was Arthur Betjeman, a relative of Sir John Betjeman, the well-known English poet, who, after studying the art of tea in Dublin and London, opened ‘The English Tea House’ in Paris. Soon partnering with Percy Barton, he founded Betjeman and Barton. Although they had brought a certain English art of tea to Paris, the two gentlemen had to contend with the inevitable influence of French taste. And so this perfect balance developed, between a purist, distinguished, slightly haughty English conception of tea and the freedom of French taste, that curiosity for flavours not without a touch of whimsy. Marie Verdel My encounter with tea ‘This year, 2023, marks a new chapter for me: accompanying you on Tasting Workshops, sharing the secrets of tea, and helping you discover all the magic of the tiny Camellia sinensis leaf, simply steeped in a bowl of hot water. So I look forward to seeing you in the shop for a series of adventures, each one more exciting than the last!’
